Road signs speak in the grammar of command: stop, enter, turn, keep out. Removed from the roads, warehouses, and private property that granted them authority, their instructions begin to fail. In Signifier / Signified, salvaged municipal, industrial, and commercial signs were reassembled inside The Chateau’s unfinished rooms. Direction became contradiction; warning became decoration; language continued issuing orders to a building already emptied of its original uses.

The installation treated each sign as both artifact and actor. A STOP sign rested on the floor. NO OUTLET faced a dead-end wall. PRIVATE PARKING addressed a room with no cars. Detached from function, the objects exposed how authority depends on context—and how quickly an order becomes sculpture when no one is obliged to obey it.

Set against exposed brick, stripped plaster, temporary framing, and stained glass, the signs acquired a second life. Their dents, rust, obsolete type, and contradictory demands formed a visual system at once bureaucratic and absurd: a ruin still trying to give instructions.
